Portable Computer
Redesigned the electronics for a specialized portable computer.
Description
Problem
The company required electronics, firmware, and regulatory engineering services to complete the design of a portable computer. Although prototypes of a previous design existed, there had been a number of problems with these prototypes. In addition, several functional enhancements were requested by the customer. The redesign effort had to incorporate known rework to date and also allow for these enhancements.
Solution
BCA redesigned the portable computer. The enectronics included:
- Intel Bulverde for main CPU including external support for ATA hard drive, Flash, and SDRAM main memory
- Intel Marathon graphics co-processor with LCD control
- Integrated AUO LCD with touchscreen and backlight
- Internal Li-ion battery with associated recharge and gas gauge circuitry
- Integrated IR (for remote control), Wifi, and Bluetooth, interfaces with integral antennas
- SD and USB host interface
- Keypad and scroll wheel interfaces
- AC/DC switchover and power regulation circuitry
- Incorporated PCB mounted speakers
- Two split keypad designs
In addition to completing this detailed electonics design, BCA also:
- Designed 8 layer RoHS compliant PCB layout including micro-via technology for Bulverde and Marathon devices
- Development a suite of uBoot diagnostics SW to facilitate testing the electronics
- Provided manufacturing support for prototype and initial production assembly.
- Responsible for regulatory testing, including intentional and unintentional radiator, immunity, safety, and SAR testing for FCC, CSA, and CE submission
- Responible for construction of and submission of the necessary documentation set leading to a approval by the FCC as an intentional radiator
- Draft of designs declaration of conformity and creation of associated technical file for CE marking purposes
- Performed power consumption analysis and developed design improvements leading to increased battery life
- Investigated alternative battery options
The product is now being sold to consumers via amazon.com.
